2006 BMW M5 Product Highlights 2006 BMW M5 Product Highlights Contributed by Jeff Seabrook Sunday, 02 April 2006 2006 BMW M5 Product Highlights General • Newest in a BMW M tradition that began in 1984 (US version introduced in 1988 model year); 4th-generation M5 (3rd generation was offered in U.S. in 2000-2003) • Sports car and luxury sedan in one exciting vehicle • Powered by an all-new 5.0-liter, 500-hp V-10 engine via an also all-new 7speed Sequential Manual Gearbox • Produced in small numbers at BMW’s Dingolfing, Germany factory • Production for U.S. began in September 2005; available at U.S. BMW centers beginning in October • Base price $81,895 including destination and handling charge What’s new/features that distinguish M5 from BMW 550i Power & performance • 5.0-liter V-10 engine – 500 hp, 383 lb-ft. torque (previous M5: 4.9-liter V-8, 394 hp, 368 lb-ft.) • All-new 7-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox, first SMG designed “from scratch” as an SMG; incorporates DRIVELOGIC shift programming in evolved, refined form • M Variable Differential Lock for enhanced traction and handling • Specially modified and calibrated front and rear suspension • Electronic Damping Control (EDC) – first appearance in a BMW M model; three modes (Comfort , Normal and Sport) • Special M5 steering system: “quicker” than 5 Series, two levels of Servotronic power assist tied to EDC modes What’s new/features that distinguish M5 from BMW 550i Power & performance (cont.) • Compound, cross-ventilated disc brakes – BMW’s largest-dimensioned, most powerful brakes ever – with 2piston front calipers • 19 x 8.5 front/19 x 9.5 rear M Radial Spoke alloy wheels with 255/40ZR-19 front / 285/35ZR19 rear performance tires • BMW M-calibrated ...
