Because of a flexibledesign that uses different sets of preselected physicallymodeled filters the complexity level of the simulationcan be chosen making the system adaptable both toavailable CPU power and to application requirements. Noextensive signal processing knowledge is required inorder to select the appropriate simulation complexity. Apreliminary evaluation involving 4 users showed that thesystem provides a satisfying localization of sounds andusers (even with limited memory and CPU power) whilealso giving access to lowlevel control over simulationcomplexity.Keywords3D audio virtual acoustic environment interactiveapplications physical modeling.INTRODUCTIONSeveral virtual audio environments with realtime 3Dinteractive audio rendering have been constructed (e.g.5]). Such systems may be used for a variety ofapplications: memory and comprehension improvementin video conferencing 2] interface enhancement forvisually impaired users 6] video gaming etc. Howevermost available systems are either too complicated tooapplicationspecific too expensive or offer too lowperformance for users who wish to develop interactiveapplications but may not have extensive knowledge inDigital Signal Processing (DSP). The architecture of realtime 3D sound systems is generally rigid and only suitedfor specific kinds of applications not allowing adaptationto available CPU power and to various types ofapplications.Hence we feel the need for lowcost flexible 3D audiosystems. Although lowcost 3D audio systems have beendeveloped previously (e.g. 3] ...
