The shock of the assignmentis still fresh but Kooser is adapting. (Im alternately scared todeath and thrilled he said.) When he fielded the phone call askinghim if hed accept the position it was late on an August Fridayafternoon; his wife was in Washington D.C. on business. Flusteredand flabbergasted the distracted Kooser knocked the drivers sidemirror off his truck as he drove from his rural farmhouse into thenearby town of Seward to return some overdue DVDs. He stoppedat the body shop to inquire about how much it would cost toreplace the mirror. Swearing at the $140 estimate he drove home and discovered the DVDs in the car seat next to him.Such an ordinary reaction to such an extraordinary honor. Thefirst poet laureate from the Great Plains Kooser was described asa major poetic voice for rural and small town America by JamesBillington Librarian of Congress.
