The Big ChillPage 2Rubber Bones / Brittle BonesThis is a simple experiment to show what happens to bones in differentcircumstances.Rubber Bones:This shows what happens to bones under acidic conditions (eg. peat bogs)when the acid leaches the calcium from the bones leaving Cartilage.Method:Put clean small bones (eg. chicken wing bones) in vinegar in aGlass container. Check daily. In 35 days the bones should be completelyflexible.An egg may also be used to show how the shell dissolves completely leaving arubber egg.Brittle Bones:This shows what happens to bones under dry exposed conditions.After time all that remains is a very brittle or hard bone.Method:Weigh a clean bone (eg. chicken leg bone) and record the weight.Put the bone in a warm dry place for several days. Weigh the bone atintervals. The bone should lose about of its weight over a period of oneweek. When dry the bone should snap easily.Page 3Sand Cast a FossilMaterials: Sand Plaster of Paris Styrofoam bowls/ or paper bowls or any other small container Water Different objects such as bones coins textured wood shells fish skeletonsetc. Old toothbrush Paints paintbrushProcedure:1.Fill the bottom of the container with a layer of sand (1 2 in).2.Choose an object that you want to make a fossil from and press theobject into the sand making sure that a clear deep impression is madein the sand.3.Repeat this procedure using as many objects as you wish.4.Remove all objects from the sand.5.Mix your Plaster of Paris.
