The Bombay Online Trading System (BOLT)enabled the oldest stock exchange in India toexpand trading activities to 118 cities across thecountry. BOLT has at present capacity to handle500000 trades in a seven hour trading sessionper day. During 199798 trading volume in onBSE ranged between Rs. 11413 crore and Rs.23310 crore as against Rs. 6248 crore to Rs.14863 crore in 199697. The ratio of total deliveryto toal turnover in April 1997 was 8.1 per centwhich rose to 9.1 per cent in July 1997. Thedelivery ratio declined in the following two monthsbut registered a steep increase thereafter to reach16.1 per cent at the end of March 1998.Turnover and Delivery Pattern30. Though secondary market in India haswitnessed a relatively high percentage ofspeculative transactions the ratios of delivery toturnover at the Bombay and National StockExchanges are higher than those in other Stockexchanges in the country. For 199697 thecombined figures of BSE and NSE in respect ofturnover and delivery were Rs. 417508 crore andRs. 48624 crore respectively. The correspondingfigures for 199798 were higher at Rs. 573968crore and Rs. 85491 crore respectively.Market Capitalisation31. As per the BSE calculations the AllIndiaMarket capitalisation witnessed mixed trend. (Itrose from Rs. 473349 crore as on March 311995 to Rs. 572257 crore as on March 31 1996.However It declined to Rs. 488332 crore byMarch 31 1997 before it rose to Rs. 589816crore as on March 31 1998.
