This is especially vital in a society which purports to encourage lifelong learning. Those working with young people in our schools have known that not all students receive the same support from their parents nor do all pupils have access to home computers or easily accessible library services. If all students are to become independent learners and develop thinking skills and critical analysis then schools and library services need to work in collaboration in order to enable equality of access to research materials and quiet working environments for those who may not have these provisions in their own homes. Independent learning grows out of adequate and appropriate resource and students need access to adults or peers who can facilitate and help with problem solving. These adults need support and guidance to enable them to be effective learners with their children rather than feeling inadequate and helpless. Parents and home have a strong influence upon students' learning and their future success. Educators and parents working together to enable independent learning to be supported within the home is one of the many ways of sharing responsibility for student learning.
