Coded magicPage 1Christmas Lectures 2006This is a card trick that doesnt require any fast fingers or hidden pockets but itdoes require quite a lot of quick thinking! The idea for this trick comes from anarea of mathematics called errorcorrecting codes where you can sendinformation so that even if some of it gets lost it doesnt matter.Heres the trick. Can you work out how its done without reading the answer?A magician gives you a pack of shuffled cards and asks you to take out five cards.You take the five cards and look at them. You then hand your five cards to themagicians assistant. The assistant shows the magician four of the cards andimmediately the magician announces what the fifth card is without seeing it!HOW THE TRICK WORKSThis trick is very clever. But it needs careful thought in order to understand it so read the explanation more than once if you need to. You are going to be themagician and youll need an assistant. Explain how this trick works to yourassistant before amazing your friends and family.To help you learn the trick make sure you have the separate sheet with the circleof numbers in front of you. (See page 5.)MAGICIANS INSTRUCTIONS SETTING UP THE TRICKAsk an audience member to choose five cards from the pack. Tell them to look atthe cards but not show them to you.
