The newsletter is the first in a two part series. This edition will define the different types of CAM. The March edition of the newsletter will inform consumers of what is being done to protect them. But before consumers can protect themselves they must be armed with knowledge. You cant walk past a newsstand with out headlines like Alternative All NaturalandHerbalRemedies jumping out at you.Because consumers want choices when it comes to health care more and more people are turning to alternative medicines and alternativepractitionersinstead oftraditionalmedicine. Choice is a good thing but it opens up opportunities for charlatans and scam artists to damage both your wallet ANDyourhealth.Consumers must at least know the basics before they can make an informed decision about what is right for them. The following definitions should help consumers at least understand what form of CAM they may be dealing with. Complementary & Alternative Medicine are two different things according to The National Center for ComplementaryandAlternative Medicine or (NCCAM). It is a component of The National Institute ofHealth. NCCAM is the Federal Governments lead agency for scientific research on CAM. The mission for NCCAM according to its website is to explore complementary and alternative healing practices in the context of rigorous science training CAM researchers and disseminating authoritative information to the public and professionals.
