Studies showthat CAM is the fastest growingarea in health care today. In 1997 an estimated 42 percent of the U.S. populationused some form of alternative therapy.1Thenumbers are even higher in family practicesettings: One study found that 50 percent of patients were using at least one alternativetherapy and only half of them had toldtheir family physician.2To continue to provide quality care weneed a basic knowledge of CAM therapiesand communication skills that will encourage patients to talk with us about the alternative therapies theyre using so that wecan offer appropriate guidance and advice.This article is meant to provide those twothings. It is not meant to encourage you touse CAM therapies in your practice. CAM therapies your patients might ask you aboutI commonly see patients using the CAMtherapies described in this article.
