The notion that the size and shape of a flys wing is controlled by the same gene that underlies the progression of tumours of the prostate gland and lung may seem far fetched but this is exactly the kind of discovery that has transformed our understanding of human biology over the past decade and which is now stimulating new approaches to unravelling the molecular mechanisms underlying human disease. Organisms such as the fruitfly Drosophila or the tropical zebrafish Danio are wellsuited to the kind of high throughput genetic analysis that allows the rare mutationalevents that cause diseases to be identified. And their relatively simple anatomy makes them excellent models for the analysis of the molecular and cellular processes thatunderlie human pathologies. An extraordinary number of developmental regulators encoded by genes discovered in Drosophila have emerged as important factors in human genetic disease in recent years. As knowledge of these regulators grows new approaches to screening diagnosis and treatment of disease are set to emerge that will revolutionise health care in the coming decades. Leading investigators from the United Kingdom and Singapore met in Singapore early this week. They included five Fellows of the Royal Society (FRS) the Worlds oldest and leading scientific academy they described their research and discussed itsapplications to the development of new therapies for a whole raft of diseases rangingfrom cardiovascular through Parkinsons and cancer. Each session of the Workshop linked fundamental studies of embryonic development to the analysis of diseaser ...
