Page 22 1. Jamaica: the shame in cane: It was June 1998. Michelle and I had just been on a tour of the Long Pond sugar factory inTrelawney in North West Jamaica. In 1991 and 1992 she undertook her PhD research on the survival strategies of people living in the village of Gaythorne where many small farmers were growing cane for this factory.1Our black Jamaican guide Marshall took us on a tour of thenarrow snaking flatbottomed valleys where most of its cane was grown on the best land of former sugar plantations. We stopped the car by some old colonial buildings on the valley floor got out and walked towards them talking. He told us that one was the prison where they used tolock the slaves in. In the distance Michelle spotted the ruin of what she thought was a seventeenth or eighteenthcentury sugar mill. Next to it was the ruined faade of what Marshalltold us was the old sugar factory. Then he pointed out the old plantations slave cemetery also inthe distance. He said that white people like us seemed to like these old colonialstyle buildings. On the papaya farm in a neighbouring valley where Id done most of my PhD research its ruinedsugar factory slave hospital and other buildings were being considered as tourist attractions.
