Content Inside:HIGHLY PATHOGENIC AVIAN FLUPage 1HIGHLY PATHOGENIC AVIAN INFLUENZA (HPAI) 1. This past April 1st President Bush signed an executive order authorizing the government to impose a quarantine to deal with any outbreak of the particularly lethal (H5N1) variation of influenza originating in Southeast Asia. 2. This order added pandemic influenza to the governments list of communicable diseases for which a quarantine is authorized giving the government authority to detain or isolate a passenger arriving in the U.S. to prevent an infection from spreading. 3. Other diseases on that list are cholera diphtheria infectious TB plague smallpox yellow fever viral hemorrhagic fevers and SARS. 4. There are 3 types of influenza viruses: A B & C. 5. Influenza A viruses are categorized by two proteins on their outer surfaces which are critical to their ability to enter body cells and cause disease: (a) Hemaglutinin (HA) (b) Neuraminidase (NA) 6. Part of the problem in dealing with (preparing for) any wave of influenza is that there are 16 different HA subtypes and 9 different NA subtypes this allowing for 144 different combinations and permutations. 7. Wild birds are presumed to be the natural hosts to all subtypes of influenza viruses. However in addition to birds type A influenza viruses can infect and circulate among several animal species including pigs horses seals and whales. Types B and C do not affect domestic animals. 8. Influenza viruses which affect birds are called avian influenza viruses and are genetically distinguishable from flu viruses which normally infect humans. 9. Avian flu viruses can be classified into low pathogenic (LPAI) and highly pathogenic (HPAI) forms based on the severity of the illness they cause in poultry. 10. Avian fluinfected birds shed the virus in saliva nasal secretions and feces and the disease spreads when susceptible birds have contact with contaminated excretions. Migratory bird flocks can carry th ...
