Home Solar Gardening by John H. Pierce © 1981, 1992 Publisher: EPL: 690.89 PIE 1992 ISBN: 1-55013-381-0 This is a well-written book with many good ideas for someone who wants to set up a small greenhouse for growing food or ornamental plants. Its only shortcoming is that many of the techniques that the author recommends are not suitable for the climate in central Alberta (53° N latitude). His experiences are based on a working location in southern Ontario (43° N latitude). Many of the suggested greenhouse structures would require extra heating to be productive (in our climate) if you were to attempt to use them year round. However many of the ideas could be used to stretch the frost-free growing season in Alberta or to allow you to grow plants which require higher growing temperatures. He shows a clever crop shelter, which uses two layers of polyethylene plastic stretched over a framework of PVC pipe. The two layers of polyethylene are then inflated to provide a layer of air insulation. I have seen this approach used to protect frost tender plants in the fall and it works quite well. The system is inexpensive and easily adapted to a variety of climates. All in all, it is worth reading this book and adapting the ideas in it to your location. If you live in a gentler climate, many of these ideas will work right out of the book.
