We were interested in finding out if some familiesdo better than others homeschooling their children. The AAE has been a unique environment forexamining homeschooling families in that it started off as being 100% homeschooling familiesand then during the 20022003 schoolyear the school switched to being 84% fulltime familiesand 16% hybrid families. A rubric was designed to assess the families on 4 main factors: meetingattendance completed paperwork growth with behavior and growth with schoolwork. Eachfamily had an academic advisor who rated each of their families on a rating scale of 1 to 4 oneach of these scales. A committee met to decide which families should be allowed into the homeschooling program in the fall of 2002 based on the rubric. The families that were not admitted tothe homeschooling program were invited to participate in the fulltime program. This situationgave the AAE a unique opportunity to examine both homeschooling and fulltime families. Inaddition we could examine what happened to the homeschooling families that switched to thefulltime program. The main measure that we have to compare these families is their standardizedtest scores. Using grades would be difficult since different people are grading the students. Insome cases it is the parents both years and in other cases it is the parent one year and the teacherthe following year.The purpose of this preliminary study was to examine differences in tests scores between thegroups.
