Organic Farming and GardeningPage 1One of these fine days the public is going to wake up and will pay for eggs meats vegetables etc. according to how they were produced.Is this statement from a report on the growth of the organic products industry which reached $3.6 billion in 2006? It could be but its not.That insight was published 65 years ago by J.I. Rodale the visionary founder of the organic movement in America. Rodale understood not only that organically produced food is more healthful and sustainablebut that it would be smart business too. The use of organic materials exclusively means greater profits for the farmer he wrote in the inaugural (May 1942) issue of his new publication then called Organic Farming and Gardening magazine.This was the first time that the word organic was used to define a sustainable approach to growing food and to living. Rodale distributed the magazine to 12000 readers. It had a 10cent cover price and he offered a oneyear subscription for $1.The letters in the first issue are from readers of Rodales previous publications Health Guide and Fact Digest in which he had begun introducing his ideas about the link between peoples health and the methods used in producing their food.The first issue of OFG included an article on composting by the renowned British agronomist Sir Albert Howard and an Introduction to the BioDynamic Techniques a topic of keen interest to todays elite vintners. But the issues most extraordinary item was the excerpt from an early book by Charles Darwin on Vegetable Mold and Earthworms. Preserve all your copies of this magazine and you will eventually have a valuable encyclopedia of information on methods and advantages of organic farming Rodale promised and like many of his other predictions it came true.As you read through this special (paperless) reproduction and youll see how clearly J.I.
