In its gardens the Royal Horticultural Society uses acombination of both organic and other methods to maintain soil fertilityand deal with damaging pests diseases and weeds. The reduced relianceon chemicals in a wholly or partly organic garden brings benefits througha more sustainable form of gardening and by encouraging wildlife.SUMMARYCONSERVATION & ENVIRONMENT GUIDELINES1The Royal Horticultural Society is sympathetic tothe basic aims of organic gardening and adopts anintegrated approach to pest disease and weedcontrol in its Gardens where it uses acombination of organic chemical biological andphysical control measures.2The Society recommends the restrained andthoughtful use of garden chemicals whethersynthetic or organic and it is concerned topromote their safe usage. It provides advice onand demonstrates in its Gardens alternativemethods such as biological control and physicaldeterrents; also the benefits of resistant cultivarsand crop rotation. 3The Society strongly advocates the improvementand maintenance of soil fertility by theincorporation of organic matter which featuresprominently in the husbandry practices at all itsGardens. It demonstrates and provides advice onthe use of green manures and suitable methods formaking garden compost. It endorses initiatives forrendering plant residues into compost such as thesegregation of municipal green waste and thedecomposition of kitchen waste in wormeries. 4The Society advises gardeners through its advisoryand information services on the careful use offertilizers and composts and will indicate organicoptions where these are available.
