The idea is to giveplants the right conditions to thrive andbe healthy enough to prevent or diminishthe effects of attacks by pests anddiseases in the first place.Then in the event that your plants dorequire some assistance to fight off pestsor diseases we can use natural controlmethods that will not damage theecosystem or our own health.Soil PreparationIf you already have a garden plot thatyou wish to convert to an organicgarden you will only need to switch toorganic fetilisers and weed/pestmanagement techniques.Converting an area of lawn to an organicgarden plot will involve a bit morepreparation but can also producewonderful results.You will need to choose a level area thatwill get as much sun as possible in thewinter. Cover it with about 2cm of astrong hot manure such as poultrymanure then start digging. The object isto dig up a clod of earth and put it backin turf(and manure) side down. Cover itwith a lighter dressing of manure andleave it for a couple of weeks. Finally aheavy dressing of compost can be mixedin lightly with a hoe. Your garden plot isnow ready for planting!Soil ConditioningApart from using general manures andcompost to feed your garden you mayneed to add other substances to conditionyour soil. This depends on what sort ofsoil you have and if you do not knowyou may need to get it analysed.
