PC Security and Annoyance considerations and resources:Page 1PC Security and Annoyance (considerations and resources) Nancy Karella 10/28/03 Virus/Worm/Trojan ProtectionIf you have ever had to recover a computer from a virus attack you know how insidious this problem is what havoc it can create and how difficult it is to recover from. The best plan is to keep informed and avoid infection. There are many resources available that will help you understand the various threats and stay protected. Following are some helpful web sites: McAfee VirusScan Glossary. A comprehensive list of terms and definitions often used in describing virus or worm attacks. (http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.as p?id=glossary&) Sophos is another company that provides virus protection software and their site contains a helpful array of easy to understand information and articles on these threats. (http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/) Protection comes in several forms: Install an antivirus program (such as: McAfee VirusScan Norton AntiVirus Sophos AVG Antivirus free at: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ] or AntiVir free at: www.freeav.com/]) and update the virus definitions weekly. Updating can be scheduled so you don't have to make the rounds of all the computers at your site each week. (Note: If your computer came with an antivirus program installed the subscription probably expired within 36 months and if you dont renew you are not adequately protected.) Run a virus scan on your hard drive at least once a week if not daily. This too can be scheduled. (See your virus protection program instructions.) Backup important files! Make copies onto floppy disks or CD Writeable disks. Educate your students and staff to practice safe computing! Never open an attachment even from a friend unless you were expecting it.
