Children and youth who arebullied need clear messages of support from adults.Although we want children to be strong andassertive so that they can stand up to kids whobully adults must realize that many children arentready to do this. Adults play critical roles in helpingstudents who are bullied and in creating a healthysafe climate in your school and community.Although these tips are directed at school personnelthey also apply to other adults who interact withtweens (e.g. coaches youth group leaders ministersand neighbors).How can you help a child or adolescent who is bullied? Dont do further damage by lending too muchsupport in public. Kids are concerned about whattheir peer group sees and knows. It may be morehelpful to lend your supportive words andgestures in private. Spend time with the student. Learn about whatsbeen going on. Listen. Get the facts (who whatwhen where and how) and assess the studentsfeelings about the bullying. Is this the first timehe or she has been hurt by bullying or is thissomething thats been going on for a while?Recognize that this discussion may be difficult forthe student. Tell him or her that you are sorryabout what happened. Assure the student thatits not his or her fault. Praise the student for their courage to discussbullying incidents with you. Explain how helpfulthey are being by providing this importantinformation not only for themselves but also forthe rest of the students and staff. Ask the student what he or she needs to feel safe.Those who are bullied may feel powerless scaredand helpless. Give this student a voice. Followthrough and grant their requests when possible.Emphasize the confidential nature of yourdiscussion ...
