Content Inside:Recipe for Success LPage 11 4S T U D E N TW R I T I N G2 0 0 6 :R e a d e r sA r eL e a d e r set us introduce ourselves: we are Gabriela Sanchez from Mexico Cristina Ghilardifrom Argentina Nicolas Garduno from Mexico and Julio Musun from El Salvador.We meet on Thursday nights with our teacher Maggie DeLollis originally from theBronx at the Huntington Public LibraryStation Branch. We came to the United States withour families and our dreams to search for opportunities and a better life.In our class we are learning to speak read and write English; we are also learning much abouteach other. Each time we meet we talk about our native countries this country and about lifein general. Many times we argue because we see things so differently. It surprises us that not allHispanic cultures get along. Cristina says that she likes our society as a whole but she sees a lot of prejudice and rudenesswhich she doesnt remember experiencing in Argentina; she is homesick for Argentina and herparents. Gabriela feels that we should look at people individually; she says that there are goodand bad people in every country. Both Nicolas and Julio believe that ifyou work hard you can succeed. Maggie is learning much about our livesand culture and hopes she is teaching all she can about American ways.We may not all see life in the same way but on one thing we canagreewe all love food. Our love of food binds us together. Veryoften we bring food to class and we trade recipes. Weve learned thatMexican food is much spicier than either Argentinian or Salvadoranfood. The best food is still made at home. The recipes for ourpupusas empanadas tortillas and calzones all use a flattened piece ofdough which is stuffed with a filling and then cooked.
