We do not necessarily need explanations below diagrams. As Figures 1 and 2 show we have so much amount of redundancies in verbal instructions. However even if Figure 2 isenough we feel that it is unkind and we even feel insecure about it. Indeed symbols when used as sole medium of folding processes create ambiguity as Figure 4 (as compared to Figure3) shows. Verbal explanations even if they are sometimes redundant exist because they let usconfirm the sense of folding. However language is not omnipotent either. Verbal explanations of folding proceduresof a crane for example perhaps do not make sense for many of us without diagrams. This is because language in its nature bears too much information the most amount of which is onlyredundant. In figure 5 the different uses of onomatopoeia in the two pictures give uscompletely different interpretations. Visual and aural information pieces complement eachother which together satisfies something like Grices conversational axioms (Give enough truerelevant and explicit information pieces and do nothing more).Language sometimes even obstruct understanding. For example in Figure 6 the verbal instruction Open wings. may make us complete an ordinary origami crane. The risk isthat such uses of the terms may make the world of origami remote from ordinary tobefolders. Proper amount of use of verbal media in diagrams must be seriously considered along with discussions of crosslinguistic origami terminology.Figu ...
