Retail Sales Survey October 2000Page 1Retail Sales Survey 1 Bank IndonesiaOctober 2000Retail Sales SurveyOctober 2000Retail trading in Jakarta has continued to deteriorate in the last 4 months from July to October 2000 nevertheless it was predicted to increase slightly onNovember. In October 2000 retail sales decreased as much as 9% which occurred primarily on the category of chemicals category of handycrafts arts and toys and category of household appliances.At the same time the survey result also showed that most retail merchants still predicted that there would be an increase in general prices and loan interest rates.The Development of Retail SalesThe decrease of retail sales of 91% in October 2000 was the worst condition of retail sales performance in the last 4 months. It was notably that the decrease occurred on the category of chemicals (754%) category of handycrafts arts and toys (516%) and category of household appliances (347%).In spite of the decrease there was an increase in other categories such as construction materials writing equipment motor vehicles and spareparts andapparels. Each of these categories increased by 137% 122% 96% and 58%respectively.Figure 1.
