SYNOPSISTHE LIFE AND THOUGHT OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.Justice love and hope. Racism poverty and war. The first describes theman Martin Luther King Jr. and his goals; the second describes the issuesof his time. From November 1955 until his death on 4 April 1968 Kingwas a significant player on the public stage. During these years we knowhim principally as a civil rights leader and antiwar activist. However hewas much more. Indeed now that there is a federal holiday symbolizingwhat he stood for what he believed and the goals he sought there is thedanger of forgetting that he was a man subject to the shortcomings of anyman. That his agenda of realizing the Beloved Community where peopleare evaluated in terms of the content of their characters rather than thecolor of their skins is only partially realized and in real danger of beingreversed. Not only has the United States become more conservative andless humane in the years since his death it is in the process of redefiningand repositioning itself in keeping with the demands of a new century.This new positioning in my opinion will further distance it from asensitive and conscious attention to its domestic needs resulting in a moreoppressive and less democratic society than was the case before especiallynow that terrorism is a topic of everyday conversation and the subject ofharsher and more stringent policies from the legislative arena. Thus thefocus of this course is directed toward understanding the man his timesand the work he was about (altering the balance of power in US society tobetter realize the founding concepts of AmericaFreedom LibertyEquality and Justiceand their import for our times) before he wasbrutally assassinated while lending moral support to a garbage collector'sstrike in Memphis Tennessee.II.
