University IT network wide open to hackersPage 1COMPUTERnetworks across theUniversity lie wide open to hackers due to serious failings in ITsecurity provision.An investigation by The OxfordStudent has learnt that CCTV cameras email passwords and MSNMessenger conversations can becompromised with ease by members of the University with only amodicum of technical knowledgejeapardising the privacy and safetyof students and dons alike.It is understood that by usingsoftware that is freely and easilyaccessible over the internet everystudent has the power to snoop onthe MSN Messenger conversationsof others or infiltrate their Webmailaccount. More advanced users caneven tap into college CCTV networks with the possibility of disrupting the entire system forcingcolleges into total security blackouts.A University spokesperson toldThe OxStu: In some cases the wishto provide the widest possiblecomputer access as cheaply as possible may mean deciding to go fora cheaper setup with potentiallylower security. Just how low thesecurity across the University hasnow become clear.Access to the videostreaming ofCCTV footage of College A waseasily available pictured right andcameras across the College couldbe taken down at the touch of abutton. One student who appearedin security footage accessed said:As well as understanding thesecurity implications it was personally shocking and especiallyworrying. As such networks are put inplace to safeguard the security ofCollege members the fact that theycan be easily bypassed should senda serious message to staff responsible for their upkeep.An IT Officer at College A said:Short of keeping the network assegmented as possible there isvery little we can do. In a warningto students he added: I am able tomonitor my network and studentregulations mean that any memberabusing it would find themselvesbefore the Dean.The OxStu has agreed not to passon the methods used to carry outsuch ...
