ReinwaldMost business data are stored in relationaldatabase systems and SQL (StructuredQuery Language) is used for data retrievaland manipulation. With XML (ExtensibleMarkup Language) rapidly becoming the defacto standard for retrieving and exchangingdata new functionality is expected fromtraditional databases. Existing SQLapplications will evolve to retrieve relationaldata as XML data using database or SQLextensions for XML. New XML data will bestored searched and manipulated in thedatabase as a first class citizen along withexisting relational data. Furthermore newapplications will emerge that solely operate interms of XML. These new XML applicationsoperate on the same database using an XMLquery language XQuery. In this paper wedescribe an integrated database architecturethat enables SQL applications with XMLextensions as well as XQuery applications tooperate on the same data. The architectureallows for a seamless flow from relationaldata to XML and back.The recent expansion of the Internet and inventionof theXML(Extensible Markup Language) data format has created both the opportunity and the needfor businesses to exchange information and tointeroperate in a uniform way that has not beenachieved nor been possible before except in isolatedsegments within the business community. Todayseconomic practices often create businesses and businessprocessesformedfrommanyincompatibl esystems.Theneedtointegrateandexchangedata withina company is as profound as it is between companies. Much of the data being exchanged are operational:datathatenabletransactionsdete rminethecourse of business processes and in the aggregatebecome business intelligence data that affect decisions of business leaders.TheXMLdata format provides a way of regularizingthe storage of semistructured data historical dataand other information requiring content management.XMLcan be used to store the c ...
